Exercise is an important part of maintaining your health. It helps you to stay alert and flexible, aids in motility (the movement of stool), helps to reduce stress, maintain a healthy weight and strengthen bones and muscles, and helps to maintain your cardiovascular system. In short, exercise, along with a proper diet is probably the closest we will ever get to the proverbial fountain of youth

Exercise can take many forms, from heavy duty weight lifting to Pilates and floor work. Cardio exercise can be as simple as walking, to competitive triathlons and other extreme pursuits.

For most people finding the time and a routine that they can fit into their daily schedule is the biggest single challenge.

One of the most common mistakes is being unrealistic about how much, and how often you'll be able to exercise. It's not uncommon for many people to make New Years resolutions to "get in shape", join a fitness club, hire a trainer and start going out every day, or every other day, for weeks on end. For all but the die-hard fitness attic, this type of schedule is simply unsustainable. Soon, a day or two a week is being missed, then a week, and soon enough they've stopped exercising all together.

It's much better to take little steps. Start with a commitment to work out three time a week for an hour, then, as you become accustomed to it and if you feel you'd like to, increase the length and /or frequency of your workouts.

The more you know about what's available the more likely you'll find a routine that works for you. Read, talk to friends and family. Find out what's out there. There are countless publications and DVDs focussed on the myriad of exercise options you're bound to find one that works for you.
